It was the Historic Hrabak Funeral Home , founded in 1892 in Chelsea, Iowa by Joseph Hrabak, Sr. Believed to be the first in Iowa. The decision was made to close the Chelsea, Iowa Funeral Home in July, 2003. The building still has the Periwinkle Casket on site, as well as other funeral history including the body elevator and Blood Slab.
It was sold to a private homeowner who resided in the building until A fire nearly destroyed this beautiful piece of history . It was abandoned and sat empty for several years and was attacked by flood as well.
When I found her she was black and lifeless, but I could only see her grand beauty! I was told the Hrabaks always maintained and kept her beautiful. I knew I would have to take this building back to the wonderful gem it was meant to be again.
That began my love affair with Periwinkle Manor. Named for the antique periwinkle casket that has been on the property since the early 1900's. A work in progress, I acquired the property in Aug of 2013. She is a fine B&B and Tea Room. Also on the property is a 8 door Coach House that housed the hearse over the years, starting with a horse drawn model . we hold Murder Mystery Parties, after parties and much more!
